Animation wise I really liked this, though you definitely played up the edgy badassery side more than the usual vibe of SMRPG. Which is totally fine, the fight scenes ended up really cool regardless. A little controversial maybe but I don't think the song fit, it wasn't just the forest theme which I appreciate, because that would be kinda boring when we have a million of those whenever Geno is brought up, but the emo vibe and AMV style presentation came off a little silly at times. Also couldn't stop staring at Geno's legs, does he not have clothes on the bottom on his in game model? really stood out for some reason.

Also, the scene with Geno Whirl was probably my favorite part of the whole thing. Great animation there and fit the edgy take just fine, that was always my favorite ability to use. The last bit with the Smash Bros invite kind of takes away from the greater picture though. You spend a bunch of time making him badass, then compare the need for that with the need for a for fun Nintendo tournament. Those invites are being handed out for that, not subspace emissary or world of light. Everything else about it was great though.

BERALAI responds:

Completely fair points

The song was challenging to write since it makes a nod to the forest theme in the guitar run while trying to be something different. My influences were definitely on the nose too. The lyrics directly reflect disappointment of fans but also hope in seeing him brought back. Companies have refused to let him exist in future games even while the demand had been there. Perhaps its all the sakuga I've watched corrupting my art hahaha
The lad doesn't have pants. It was odd animating that portion so the boots were made a little longer to ease it up. Still odd 🤔

I think at the end I could have done better to iterate the point. A lot of fans like myself have been really upset in the past about his Smash deconfirmation. It was really upsetting. But there needed to be a proper send off for Geno fans. The end was a send off to the character saying "Although he may not be in smash, he's cool with allowing others to be instead ie Sora"
(I love geno whirl too haha)
Thanks for the watch and your critiques! 🤟

That took a turn didn't it?
Very surreal and interesting to watch. Visually weird and satisfying to see an alien upside down world and mystery substance. The coiling through the house with the rooms made to support it was very cool. I found the ending a little odd, but I guess it makes sense. I saw the bird perch and hole to live in as if maybe the bird was a regular companion and part of his ritual. But instead it seems the bird house is just there to lure unsuspecting birds for food? I did like how the bird was essentially made of ink and splattered when he flapped his wings, and just a bunch of bones underneath. I think as a longer animation there could have been more after the reveal of what's inside the little planet. But obviously animation takes a long time and this was likely a huge amount of work.

Also now seeing this is a part 3, so I'll have to watch the others, great job and great animation.

Hey! Thanks for liking it :) sad to tell you that there are no other parts. Before I finished thisboroject, iposted what I have done in seperate episodes. But nowthat everything is finished i posted this as one little movie. Sorry for the confusion.
But if u liked this, i have lots of other short little stories that will scratch the same itch if you have one. Check my YT channel for more :)

There's a face I haven't seen in awhile. This looks amazing, it must have taken a long time to animate so smoothly. I really missed out on the Darkstalkers series. It has such amazing character design, but I never really grew up with it to get the same nostalgia others have. It's hard for me to pick up a fighting game and play through it unless there's a really good single player mode, which all modern fighters besides Blazblue seem to lack.

Anyway, you did amazing. Going right in my favorites

MichaFrario responds:

Thanks! I didn't grow up with this, first played DS in the mid 2010's Older fighting games like Soul calibur 2 had nice single player modes

Man Hinca, your animation quality is always so good. Maybe it's just my untrained eye but it seems like you don't half ass movement very much at all. How long does it even take you to draw a minute of animation? are you just really fast at it? how do you find time to enjoy yourself when you aren't animating? it must be so time consuming even as good as you are.

Thank you for doing what you do.

hinca responds:

i basically work all day haha animation is really fun for me so i spend all day and most night doing it, a minute of animation will depends a lot on whats on it, but i usually take about a week
i think i can do it that fast because i work alone, that way i'm in full control of the time 😄

Man that was fantastic. I love how you incorporate the sketchy artstyle into motion. You used minimal animation for some parts where it wasn't needed, then heavy animation showing you can do it cleanly and perfect everywhere else.

I also loved the little details, like the worm wrapping around like a mask, or helping pull out the boned hand when cutting the moth creature. I know there's more than that, but those were parts I really liked.

Also the sound design, I don't know where you get your sounds from, but the whole thing has such a unique strongly insect feel to go along with all the tension. Really setting yourself apart with this animation.

AntonM responds:

Thanks for the kind words :))) Over the years I've just built this huge selection of homemade sounds just from making a couple toons here and there

This had the cutest animation style. I loved it. Funny concept but kinda =/= ending. I wish it was longer

horrorhare responds:

i wish it couldve been longer, honestly wanna make another short like this in the future! if it hadnt been for the tight deadline and other school stuff, i wouldve fleshed it out more lol. thank u for the compliments tho :3!

I came back to this later because a lot of your work is really bizarre and fun to rewatch, but this time I've been noticing all the little extra details, and there's so much going on in this one scene, You mentioned 'eye candy' and you weren't kidding.

I wanted ask, since I see no other way this all comes together besides spontaneously, did you just start drawing little animation pieces and zoning out? or do you plan a bunch of stuff from the beginning? It makes me think more so of someone who's bored during a school paper and making a bunch of doodles, except all those doodles are in the same space and overlapping with each other thanks to animation. Whatever the process, I think your work really stands out creatively and keeps me coming back.

Andyl4nd responds:

Hey, thank you for the kind words!! Each animation I make starts off with a concept that helps me build the motivation to work on it, but some ideas distort so much throughout the development process that it eventually falls into that category of "zoning out and doodling". This one is definitely one of them, I was mostly occupying myself with something to draw while I streamed on twitch haha. Hope that somewhat satisfies your question!

Loved it, very gruesome but still very cute. Think it needed a bit more cute to balance things out.

parks2 responds:

Good point!

fuck yeah, it was fucking worth it though my man. This looks incredible! How long did it take you? You put all the characters on display and animated them really well, really showing your talent in pixel art. Great submission.

gatekid3 responds:

i cant give a time frame. i was working on and off for the duration of the contest, which was about a month

I love stop motion and stop motion films, the fact its such an involved process and takes a lot of hard work gives me a lot of appreciation for it. People see nightmare before christmas or corpse bride and theyre like ''ooh spooky movie'' and im like "This looks fucking cool and someone probably died with how long it took to finish." Kubo and the two strings is the most recent stopmotion i've seen, and now yours.

SketchMeNot responds:

Oh gosh due thank you so much for your kind words!! (>w<) This project was definitely waaaaay harder than I expected it to be hahaha x,D Still, it was super fun and I'm really glad I got the chance to try my hand at stop motion. Stop motion media still amazes me every time I see it! (^w^)
